Forest school sessions have been continuing in the middle school department and for the past few weeks it has been our KS2 pre-formal classes who have been joining in.
As their thematic topic is currently ‘Space’ we have joined in child led exploration around this including: building rockets with large wooden bricks before counting down and knocking them over; making salt dough moon rocks by pressing natural materials into the dough to make craters; some of us visited a space station filled with planets and comets; moon walk over the uneven surface of the site.
At the end of the sessions we have been unwrapping an astronaut snack (biscuit wrapped in shiny foil) and tasting a hot chocolate.
The benefits of being outside are huge for our learners with opportunities to regulate, develop fine and gross motor skills, have sensory experiences beyond the classroom and more.
It’s been wonderful taking groups out and seeing the benefits of active learning in an outdoor environment!
